Befitting the occasion children managed the whole show and the dignitaries were happy to play to their tunes. With the children singing a welcome song the programme took off to a smooth start. The hall was bursting at its seems. Film stars Mr. Murali Mohan and Ms. Laya who had earlier signed autographs and exchanged pleasantries with the kinds who had a whale of a time shaking hands and taking photos with their favourite matinee idols, now watched the happenings happily. Murali Mohan spoke from the heart and pleaded with the Home Minister to help the cause of children's films in a big way to add another feather of glory in Hyderabad's cap. Mr. Veda Kumar, Chairman, Children's Film Society briefed the audience about the history of the film society movement right from its inception in 1991, Hyderabad becoming a permanent venue in 1995 and setting up of Federation of Films Society of India. He told that so far 150 entries were received in various categories for screening. Films will be shown to delegates at four venues and also screened in 41 other theatres in the Twin Cities. 1st Asian Children's Film Festival-2002, Hyderabad
This is the first time that an Asian Children's Film Festial is being held in Hyderabad. Organized by the Children's Film Society, A.P., the festival will beheld every other year, alternating with the government-organized International Children's Film Festial. With these alternating festivals every 14th November will become a day to be eagerly awaited for.
I am especially happy that on one side the Central and State Government's mighty efforts and on the other, the modest trails of a voluntary children's film society of A.P. are going hand in hand for one common cause. That of promoting good children's films. That of making children become discerning and active viewers by learning the art and science of film appreciation. And that of creating and nurturing among them great love and enthusiasm for the medium. Having organized seven Hyderabad Children's Film Festivals in association with the State Film, TV and Tourism Development Corporation and having studied their impact and influence on children as well as adults, I am confident that the Children's Film Society, A.P., one day or the other, will find children turning into mature viewers and setting their own standards in film making. May be setting even their own agenda for films.
To make this happen sooner, the Children's Film Society, A.P. has embarked on several programmes. Important among them are the workshops on Script Writing, Film Making and Film Appreciation not to overlook the importance of workshops on Puppetry, Animation, and Dramatization. By inviting accomplished film personalities to interact with children and by making children boldly and openly speak out on various aspects and issues relating to children's films in Open Forums, the Society believes that it is helping children view, ponder, analyze and discuss issues critical for the growth of a healthy cinema, a healthy film making and a healthy viewership. It is also helping build bridges between children and adults and also between children and children.
The Andhra Pradesh Children's Film Society realises that it is not sufficient to limit activities to the Twin Cities. the activities must also engulf the vast segments of children from towns and rural areas. Keeping this in view the Society today has branches in fifteen districts. It has also extended affiliation to 14 children's sections of several film societ no doubt that it will nto be long before it makes its presence felt.
An activity that deserves special attention is film making by children. Last year, through a workshop, children made two video films. This year, too, they have made two films. The scripting, casting, enacting, shooting, editing and dubbing is all done by them. Bu jumping into the pool of film making during their formative years, it is hoped that they would subsequently learn to swim and enjoy it.
Just as children have drams and their learning and playing are directed towards fulfilling them, the Children's Film Society also has its own dreams. One of them is to build a strong network of film clubs in schools. The other is to establish a rich Children's Film Resource Center. The Society is living by its dreams. It is wonderful to do so. Just as it is wonderful to give children, especially the deprived ones, the best.
The response to this first Asian Children's Film Festival is quite heartening. Over 150 films from Five Countries are being screened in about 50 centres. There are 250 child delegates from the State and 50 delegates from outside. Several important film personalities are going to participate and interact with children. And, about two lakh Children are expected to watch the films and find out how life of children from various countries is depicted on the silver screen. They are going to compare and contrast. They are going to think and discuss. And above all they all are to enjoy the screenings. Yes, they are going to like the first Asian Children's Film Festival and they are going to wait for the subsequent festival.
