“In Israel, Cinema is not just for entertainment. As the society matured, the role of films has become diversified. The subjects have become varied. Hope for the future is one of the important themes. We have begun to ask questions like ‘Are films enriching social, political and other debates’?                   Mr. Dan Stav, Charge d’ Affairs, Embassy of Israel, New Delhi said making his opening statement at an interactive session on “Children’s Films” organised by the Children’s Film Society, A.P.  at the Press Club, Somajiguda, Hyderabad

Mr. M.N.Raju.,  Mr. Veda Kumar. M., Mr.  Dan Stav,  Mr. Bh.S.S. Prakash Reddy (R.. L) at the Interactive Session

Answering a volley of questions posed by students drawn from various schools he asserted that Israel is indeed giving importance to children as they are important for their future. Government is supporting making of children’s films but not to the extent it would really like to. However, some topics relating to children’s films have been made a part of the school curriculum. In response to specific questions on war and religion in Israel and their impact on children, Mr. Dan Stav conceded that they continue to pose some problems like, for the last decade or so the Israeli children have been fed on hopes of peace with their neighbors and now suddenly they find all prospects of peace shattered. Regarding religion he said, that as religion does not allow sculptures, paintings or images, there have not been many religious films. However, in the modern context there have been some attempts at making religious films. Commenting on the effect of Western, especially Spanish and American influence, Mr. Dan Stav elaborated on Channel 6, which daily runs from about 7 in the morning till 8 in the night and is exclusively a children’s channel.

Students participated in the Interaction Session

Presiding over the session M. Veda Kumar, Chairman, CFS., A.P. told about the various efforts initiated for promoting children’s films in India and Asia. Notable among them were the formation of Federation of Children’s Film Societies of India, forming of children’s film clubs in schools, conducting film appreciation programmes and workshops for children, holding of 1st Asian Children’s Film Festival in Hyderabad and the efforts to impart due importance to Asian Films and Asian Children’s Films not only in Asian film Festivals but in all International Film Festivals as such.

Mr. M.N.Raju, Vice Chairman, CFS, AP., Mr. Bh.S.S. Prakash Reddy, General Secretary, CFS, A.P., were also present. Earlier Mrs. Shobha Singh had welcomed the gathering. Master Rao proposed a Vote of Thanks.

Malli, a ten year old girl, helps her poor parents by collecting firewood. She here worships “Mr Doctor” the village vet, who converses with his patients from the animal World. She imitates him secretly.

Malli has two dreams : to get a new dress for the festival and to get the “Blue Bead” to cure her friend’s inborn deficiency .The blue Bead was mentioned by old Manu, the village story teller. Monu conceives purely imaginary heroic tales which impress Malli. He had mentioned in one of his stories how the good spirit had given him a blue bead as a gift. Malli bribes Monu with some honey in return for which he recites a nonsensical. Meaningless Rhyme inviting the spirit.

One black night Malli recites the rhyme to invoke the spirit, in vain. On festival day, she is thrilled to get her new yellow dress. On her way back from the woods, she rescues a fawn shot down by a poacher. She finds her way through the thick forest to reach the vet’s house late at night to treat the fawn.

SYNOPSIS OF THE FILM " KARAMATI COAT"

Bobbing up and down on the waves of a sea is a coat which is washed on to a sea-shore. A kind old lady picks it up and gives it to Raghu, a poor and fourteen year old boy and disappears before he knows what to say. When Raghu puts his hand in the pocket he finds a rupee coin. Raghu makes a beeline for a sweetmeat shop to buy himself a sumptuous treat. He finds this is just the beginning of a windfall for him. Very soon, Raghu realizes out that the coat handed to him is a magic coat, which yielded a fresh rupee every time he put his hand in its pocket. So begins a time of infinite joys, adventures, and with it, the inevitable troubles and dangers. A gang of three crooks discover the secret of his coat and start hounding him for it. His brother-in-law begins to covet it too. Problems abound. Raghu realizes that easy money cannot be savoured. He throws the magic coat back into the sea, now that it has made him a wiser person.
